Scott Barkham has worked in the entertainment industry for nearly 25 years, building his career through various fields of work focused in music. His career began in 1991, when he managed a state-of-the-art recording studio for ‘Steely Dan’ lead vocalist Donald Fagen and producer Gary Katz for a seven year stint. From this, he expanded into A&R and talent scouting for Fagen’s album “Kamakiriad”, which eventuated in touring Steely Dan ensembles. Among his A&R/scouting credits were two acts that signed via Gary Katz to Warner Brothers Records: Groove Collective and Repercussions – the later for which he played keyboards on their debut album, “Earth & Heaven”, and toured internationally. Barkham’s scouting success lead to working as an A&R for indie label Jake Records (distributed by Interscope) from 1997 to 1999. During this time, he signed hip-hop group Digital Underground and released their album “Who Got The Gravy”, featuring Big Punisher and KRS-ONE. Barkham’s talent work then lead him to working for a number of other endeavors, including USA music television networks ‘VH1’ as a talent producer (1999-2001), ‘Fuse’ as the head of on-air talent (2001-2007), and for the BET music series “Master of the Mix” as the director of talent (2010-2011). While working on “Master of the Mix”, Barkham established a friendship with the world renowned DJ, Rich Medina, and when the show wrapped production, he began to work as his exclusive worldwide manager, which continues to this day. From that experience, he also developed friendships and professional consultancies for the two finalists on the series, DJ Scratch and Vikter Duplaix. Having already been managing artists for several years prior, in 2012, Barkham Creative LLC was established, an entertainment company with focus on artist management, independent A&R, artist direction, consultancy and video production. That year, he began managing the newly established Melbourne group Hiatus Kaiyote, now signed to major label Flying Buddha/Sony by Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, The Fugees, Nas, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys) – who he co-manages with Melbourne-based manager Si Jay Gould (Wondercore Island). The band gained a strong online following the release of their independently released and self produced EP ‘Tawk Tomahawk’ in April, 2012, winning fans over via tastemaker DJ’s and blogs in Europe and North America including Gilles Peterson (BBC1 & BBC 6) who awarded with Breakthrough Artist of The Year in January 2013 at his Worldwide Awards. As a result, they were able to crowd-fund their first international tour in early-2013, performing at SXSW and selling out every single show on its unprecedented run. Signed to booking agency CAA (Creative Artists Agency) by Cara Lewis, considered to be the most powerful agent in hip-hop, soul and R&B (Kanye West, Eminem, Rhianna, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, The Roots), the band has gone on to tour the US four times and Europe twice. Hiatus Kaiyote have been featured on the front cover of Wax Poetics, received rave reviews from the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Arsenio Hall Show ,and Queen Latifah Show, and count some of the most cutting edge artists in the world as fans including: Prince, Pharrell Williams, Questlove, A Tribe Called Quest, Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Animal Collective, and Dirty Projectors. The band was nominated for a Grammy in 2014 for Best R&B Performance, the first Australian band ever nominated for an R&B category; they also performed the song as part of the pre-telecast event. Through working with Hiatus Kaiyote, Barkham has begun to collaborate with Melbourne based manager Si Jay Gould, and his boutique management company Wondercore Island, who represent Australian artists such as Kirkis, and Oscar Key Sung amongst others. The two have recently signed to co-manage the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Ainslie Wills.
