There have been many songs documenting the tumultuous state of the world in 2020. We are in the middle of a global Pandemic with Covid 19 for which there is currently no cure and also a soon to be totally decimated global economy, but if that wasn’t enough to deal with in one year, we have the global protests for racial equality which started as a result of Police brutality and the disproportionate deaths of Black People with police custody.
JD Days has written a great little RandB track talking about social problems that exist around us. Homelessness, poverty, economic problems and despair “Getting stronger, everyday…” To say this is true is an understatement. Yes, these issues have always been there, but in these times, I think everyone would agree the numbers of those suffering are definitely rising, not just in the West but across the world too.
Lyrically, it’s what you would expect with a name like Liberty. I’d call it a modern day funkier, grittier version of Marvin Gaye’s Classic “What’s going on”. JD Days performs “Liberty” in collaboration with West Coast Rap, Soul and Hip Hop artists. Extremely soulful almost Gospel screaming for ‘Liberty” The vocal style really works well with the lyrics. Instead of punchy short nursery rhyme rhythm, the vocals or really laid back and legato, even blending into one beautifully sung line packed with bags of melodic niceness. There’s a couple of tight verses too, spat at various points within the track.
Melodically it’s like a lullaby trying to calm your mind and help you de-stress when everything going around you is chaotic. Beats wise, again really laid back – if I was to make a comparison, I’d say West-Coast low-riding G-funk. Upon reading the brief, after I heard the track (as I always do so I can listen without prejudice) I found out that this particular song in a collaboration song is a collaboration with Temple Beats of Radio One fame.
The whole track really fits together nicely, and I can see this being blasted out in whips and moved into clubs across the world, even though it’s a relatively low tempo song.
