“Girl, you hit me just like a fallout” sings Brittany Davis over a soothing swirl of RandB, soul and hip-hop influences on the latest look at their debut album Image Issues. Arriving March 1, the collection has been described by Davis as an autobiographical ‘sonic film,’ with the artist noting: “as a blind person I've never had an actual visual experience, sound is the way I've always seen the world.” On the latest offering “Fallout,” Davis mines through the nuances and complications of lost love - confessing candidly that “I know she bad for me,” but also “late at night when my phone rings…I know I’ll be answering.” It’s this level of honesty and intimacy that sets Davis apart across Image Issues - a sweeping 26-track collection that touches on topics from discrimination as a Black, non-binary, blind musician, to traumatic family experiences involving abuse, gun violence and the prison system. But above everything, it’s a celebration of all that Davis has already risen above and overcome.

On ‘Image Issues,’ Davis can be heard playing every instrument and contributing every vocal part. They also serve as the sole writer on each of the songs (and spoken word pieces dubbed ‘Treadmill Memories’) that comprise this debut album. From within their vibrant creativity and seemingly-limitless talent comes a cross-genre musical landscape inspired by artists like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Beyonce and Cardi B. Another inspiration is Davis’ mentor - Pearl Jam founder and guitarist Stone Gossard - who befriended them in their shared Seattle music scene. The two play together in the band Painted Shield, and Gossard will release Image Issues on his own Loosegroove Records this March 1. Davis also collaborated on Image Issues with co-producer Josh Evans (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Brandi Carlile), who notes “it’s like a Prince record or a Stevie Wonder record. It almost feels a little subversive to make music like this…it’s sneaking a real art project into a pop record.”

Davis’ debut album follows their breakout I Choose To Live EP, which saw them make notable appearances at SXSW and on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk. The excitement will continue into 2024, with even more tour dates and festival appearances to be announced soon (a current list is below).
