Grammy-winning artist Dave Alvin and Grammy nominee Jimmie Dale Gilmore have unveiled their second collaborative album TexiCali, out today via Yep Roc Records. The 11-song collection serves as a roadtrip across Alvin and Gilmore’s home states and the memories within, expanding on their “poetic geographical autobiography” (Austin American Statesman) and celebrating shared musical influences, friends gone too soon and the sounds of long drives on Interstate 10 between California and Texas. Two of Americana’s most celebrated storytellers and an “unexpected example of twin brothers from another mother” (LA Times), the pair elevate their partnership from touring to recording to songwriting, with TexiCali showcasing more original work and collaborations than ever before.

The duo have previewed TexiCali with advance tracks “We’re Still Here” which was named Today’s Top Tune by KCRW, “Southwest Chief,” a tender ode to Alvin’s time touring the country via ‘Roots on the Rails’ and “Trying To Be Free,” a long-lost Gilmore demo, first recorded for Buddy Holly's parents. Other tracks include “Roll Around” where “Gilmore honors [longtime bandmate Butch] Hancock featuring terrific reggae-tinged percussion and hard-edged guitar interplay” (Glide) and “Down The 285,” a tribute to late Austin songwriter Josh White, which captures the feeling of traveling the highway stretch from New Mexico toward Texas at night. Alvin, a Los Angeles punk-roots pioneer from The Blasters, and Gilmore, a founding member of West Texas’ alternative country trio The Flatlanders, initially joined forces in 2017 for what they thought was a one-off tour. Instead, it brought them a Billboard #1 blues album (2018’s Downey To Lubbock), a CNN spotlight and a "freewheeling, joyous" (Rolling Stone) partnership. “A love of experimentation turns out to be one of the many traits that create a bond between Dave and me. That experiment took us all over the country,” says Gilmore.
This Summer, Alvin and Gilmore will set off on a North American headline tour, accompanied by Alvin’s longtime band The Guilty Ones. The tour begins with ten shows across Alvin’s native California before heading to Gilmore’s home state of Texas. Highlights also include a sold-out show at City Winery NYC, World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, an official showcase at AmericanaFest and more.
