Dutch newcomers Honey I’m Home are today sharing their debut single ‘Wishful Thinking’, a thrilling introduction to their own buoyant, head-in-the-clouds shoegaze offering.
The band – completed by Thom Schotanus, Sofie Ooteman, Jasper Meurs, Hugo de Groot and Evelien Keesmaat – arrive with their first official single release on the back of touring in Europe with artists including Goat Girl and Hotline TNT. ‘Wishful Thinking’ was produced by Honey I'm Home and mixed by Sonny Diperri (Julie, DIIV, Protomartyr), its fuzzed-up leanings coupled with an almost impatient approach to reaching a killer melody, immediately pointing towards a band with a clear creative direction and purpose.
Written in the aftermath of the band’s rehearsal space burning down - and subsequent destruction of their amps, guitars and pedals - anyone might be forgiven for confusion over ‘Wishful Thinking’s deceptively sunny aesthetic. What becomes clear though is that the band aren’t wallowing in the present. ‘Wishful Thinking’ is a cloud-parting, euphoric daydream that finds that band at once lusting for the past and hoping for the future. In soaring reassurances like “everything will be fine” and “we’ll work out everything”, the song becomes a heart-warming pep-talk about chasing reconnection.
Vocalist and guitarist Thom Schotanus comments on the song: "‘Wishful Thinking’ explores the longing to reconnect with people no longer in your life, whether it’s a lost love or a departed family member. We tried to capture the intensity of that unfulfilled desire with a layered, dreamlike soundscape."
