Today, with the announcement of its second Outline festival of 2023, Knockdown Center continues to push the limits of what a venue can be for its artists and audience. As much a celebration of cutting-edge music as it is a showcase for the most singular architectural space in New York City nightlife, the quarterly event series "has become catnip for adventurous listeners" (The New York Times).
Outline highlights both the expressive power of sound and the expansive potential of Knockdown Center's 50,000 square feet. Taking place from 6pm-1am on Saturday, August 5th, across two stages in the venue's sprawling Main Hall and backyard Ruins, Outline's next edition will mirror the unrestrained and cathartic feelings of freedom that are often associated with summer. The lineup will bring together the head-nodding and surrealist compositions of Brooklyn's Crumb, the electric tapestry and eclectic theatrics of Meg Remy's U.S. Girls, the explosive joy and intense extremes of Brooklyn's Model/Actriz, the dazzling and spontaneous discordance of Philly-based Palm, the unconventional rhythms and punchy synth-powered sophisti-pop of Grace Ives, the enthralling, Spanish-language dance music of Montreal duo Pelada, and the infectious energy of John Eatherly's Club Intl. Whether indoors or outdoors, each set will deliver a euphoric showcase of experimental styles that equally move one's brain and body.
Tickets for Outline's summer edition are available at 12pm ET on Thursday, May 25th, following a presale happening now. Find more information HERE
While no two Outlines are the same, each installment is genre-agnostic and ingeniously curated, with the intent to bring out the best in the artists and Knockdown Center's physical design. For its grand return this year, Outline kicked off with two drastically different nights that united international leaders of the electronic world last month (Matmos, Jlin, Pan Daijing, Meth Math, Golin, Joe Rainey), as well as an expansive vision of modern jazz and RandB that opened the venue's outdoor season (Standing on the Corner, Makaya McCraven, Laraaji, Liv.e). Also introduced as part of Outline was Vessels, a new painted mural by artist Mark Mulroney. Presented with local gallery Mrs., the collaboration is the first iteration of Knockdown Center's FiftyTwo Ft. series of wall-based commissions since January 2020, and it will be on display in the East Corridor through September 4th.
From the historic factory floor that now serves as the 3,100-capacity Main Space, to the century-old concrete Ruins that have just come alive for a spring and summer full of open-air concerts, communal gatherings and other non-stop parties, Knockdown Center's shifting stages and labyrinthine layout continually transform to enhance and react to each performance. With recent highlights including Jai Paul's first-ever headline show, Eric Andre's 40th Birthday Party and so much more, Knockdown Center's summer calendar will further expand its most eclectic and high-profile year of programming yet.
In addition to Outline, the Queens venue will host Pride events with Pitchfork and Them(featuring Tinashe, Lido Pimienta, Pom Pom Squad and Zebra Katz), Horse Meat Disco, Get Wrecked andamp; Carry, Octo Octa andamp; Eris Drew, plus Hot Chip, Balance and Composure, Panda Bear and Sonic Boom, Boiler Room, Bonobo, Black Country, New Road, Tangerine Dream, TV Girl and many others in the coming months.
