The 2024 Global Citizen Festival, aimed at tackling extreme poverty, will be held on Central Park's Great Lawn on September 28. Headliners include Post Malone, Doja Cat, Jelly Roll, and Rauw Alejandro, with more acts to be announced. Hosted by Global Citizen Ambassador Hugh Jackman, the event will feature notable appearances by Dr. Jane Goodall and Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
This year's festival addresses critical global issues such as poverty, climate change, and equity. As extreme poverty persists, infectious diseases spread, and climate crises intensify, the festival calls for urgent action from global leaders and the public.
Key Goals of the Festival:
Defeat Poverty:
- Increase G7 countries' contributions to the International Development Association by 25%
- Support a $100 billion IDA replenishment to aid 1.5 billion people, provide electricity to 250 million, and combat malnutrition.
Defend the Planet:
- Invest $1 billion in the Amazon rainforest and support indigenous communities.
- Phase out coal, oil, and gas in line with COP agreements to ensure a green transition.
Demand Equity:
- Commit $5 billion to ensure access to nutritious food, strong health systems, and quality education.
- Fully fund Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, to reach children who have never been vaccinated.
Statements from Artists and Leaders:
- Doja Cat emphasized the importance of collective action to end poverty and promote equity.
- Hugh Jackman expressed excitement about returning as host, highlighting Global Citizen's impact on 1.3 billion lives.
- Janja Lula da Silva, Brazil's First Lady, stressed the importance of protecting the Amazon rainforest and supporting its vulnerable populations.
Global Coalition Support: The campaign is backed by over 90 organizations worldwide, including the United Nations and the World Health Organization, advocating for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The 2024 Global Citizen Festival calls on individuals to take action through the Global Citizen app, emphasizing the power of collective effort to drive meaningful change in addressing poverty, climate change, and equity.
