Remember back on March 6th of this year when we were all so shocked at the cancellation of SXSW in Austin and Ultra Music Festival in Miami? Well, here we are, seven months later, finding out that the 2021 version of the SXSW will be taking place, like so many other events, virtually. Organizers have left the door open for some sort of physical event, though, with the current trajectory of the pandemic, that possibility is seeming less and less likely as the days drag on. SXSW announced on September 22nd that it is working with the City of Austin and public health authorities on plans for a physical event in 2021, and that more information would be provided when it becomes available. The 2021 SXSW Online program will also look a bit different than past years when it comes to showcase submissions and approvals as they have implemented a curation process whereby priority is given to presenters and artists originally booked for the 2020 event, with others to follow. The event is scheduled for March 16-20, with the digital experience to feature “conference keynotes and sessions, screenings, showcases, networking, and exhibitions.”
According to the organizers, the main goal of South By Southwest is one of helping creative people achieve their goals and they aim to deliver on that missionin a way that brings together the community of creatives and provides a platform for them to further their goals.
“The challenge of building a new future is one that we’re excited to tackle. This has been such a year of change and we, like the entire world, are reshaping our perspective on how we connect. We’re pleased to be working on SXSW Online as part of our program for 2021, and regardless of platform, we will continue to bring together the brightest minds from creative industries worldwide.” – Roland Swenson, CEO and Co-Founder
Entries for the 2021 digital experience will open on Tuesday, October 6 with PanelPicker proposals for SXSW and SXSW EDU, as well as Film Festival submissions.
As with everything else these days though it seems like SXSW plans could change at a moment's notice. We'll wait and see.
