One of the greatest things about the 90s was the wealth of incredibly talented artists who carved out the genre that came to be known as "shoegaze" through epic wall-of-sound distortion combined with heavy effects-laden guitar riffs over beautiful and introspective melodies and vocals. Artists like The Jesus And Mary Chain, Catherine Wheel, Drop Nineteens, The Swirlies, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, etc. employed the heavily melodies over wall-of-sound distortion while artists like The Cocteau Twins, Galaxie 500, Stereolab, Slowdive, Lush, The Cranes etc choose to take a more subtle approach through less distortion but more reverb and looping. These bands gave birth to a genre that seemed to almost disappear in the early 2000s and then slowly reappear over the past 7-8 years thanks to a renewed interest in the foundations of all things "indie". Artists like DIIV, Amusement Parks on Fire, A Place To Bury Strangers, Nothing, Beach House, Blouse, Ringo Deathstar, Gleemer and more are carrying the banner well into the new era, and introducing what has long been my personal favorite style of music and some amazing artists from days gone by to a whole new generation of fans.
