The Velveteers have shared their new single “Bound In Leather” - the final advance offering from their upcoming full-length A Million Knives, out February 14th via Easy Eye Sound. The Colorado trio – featuring tour-de-force frontwoman Demi Demitro backed by dual drummers Baby Pottersmith and Jonny Fig – use vintage disco grooves and spellbinding falsettos to pursue rock n’ roll’s non-binary, queer and female-fronted future. “Bound In Leather” is an ode to transcending one’s own confines, complete with the band's signature “monstrous sound” (Under The Radar) and “buzzing pile-driver” (SPIN) energy. To celebrate, The Velveteers also appear on the cover of the Zane Lowe-curated New Music Daily playlist today at Apple Music.
“Bound In Leather” follows The Velveteers’ release of “On and On” last month - a rallying cry against rampant misogyny in the music industry - which was named a Song You Need To Know by Rolling Stone and a “best of” selection by outlets from Guitar World to GLAAD. Paste noted that: “Demitro is one of the most exciting frontpeople in rock ‘n’ roll.”
“To me, ‘Bound In Leather’ feels like looking through a kaleidoscope,” says Demitro. “It’s a song about feeling bound in your skin, the chorus in part being inspired by a type of dysphoria. Feeling trapped by your own skin and wishing you weren’t bound by its limitations here on earth. It also has many themes of feeling guarded and needing someone to prove their trust to you, ’cause they aren’t going to win it over so easily.” The Velveteers wrote “Bound In Leather” with Greg Cartwright (The Oblivians, Reigning Sound) and seven-time GRAMMY® winner Dan Auerbach in Nashville. “When we started coming up with the lyrics, I was singing and Dan kept telling me to sing higher and higher. Singing falsetto is something I don’t normally do but it just felt really right for the song,” Demitro explains.
