You'd think from the resounding "hell yeah!" that flooded the musician community on the internet yesterday afternoon that some groundbreaking new medical technology had been released, allowing musicians worldwide the chance to get back to work performing live music for live audiences or, for those of us on the service side of the music industry, allowing us to get back to our jobs facilitating such activities. You'd be wrong, sort of. That said, it seems that Bandcamp, the current darling of the online musician community, has come kind of close. The platform, currently giving Spotify at least a slight run for its money, at least in the credibility-with-artists department, has announced a new ticketed live streaming service in an effort to make it easier for artists to perform, and, more importantly, to connect with their fans, and for those fans to directly support the musical artists which they adore.
Introducing Bandcamp Live, a simple-to-set-up service that, even if a musical artist, band, singer-songwriter, etc. has never streamed before, will make the task of live streaming both easy and profitable. There are several benefits to using the platform including auto-notifications sent to music fans when a new live-streamed show is announced, an easy ticket purchasing system, especially since so many music fans already have a Bandcamp account with a credit card saved on file, and the simple fact that new ticket buyers automatically become followers and are urged to join the artists mailing/emailing list. One of the biggest benefits of all though, is that live streaming artists are provided with a virtual "merch booth" where their merchandise items are displayed right alongside the current stream allowing fans and streamers the opportunity to make impulse purchases live during the stream without having to "leave the room". Alongside that merch booth Bandcamp Live has provided an optional chat function, allowing fans of musical artists to discuss the show, talk about their favorite songs and moments, announce their merchandise purchases and get to know each other, and best of all, allows the artist and/or their chosen moderator to get to know their fans and engage directly with the community.
Pricing for Bandcamp Live is completely transparent with no hidden "convenience" fees or commissions, at least until March of 2021 when a 10% commission kicks in. The artists set their own ticket price and thats exactly what the fans are charged.
Bandcamp has been getting a lot of attention lately from the artist community thanks to their launch of Bandcamp Fridays, a single day each month where they waive their revenue share, resulting in around $35 Million for artists since the pandemic began in addition to the $126 Million fans have paid to artists through Bandcamp over the same time period. According to a statement from Bandcamp, "Bandcamp Live is the next step in our effort to help our community thrive during this crazy time. Streaming will never replace the experience of in-person performances, but we believe it’s the next best thing, and will provide artists with a powerful tool to build and connect with their fans both now, and when Covid is behind us and we’re all out enjoying the magic of live music once again."
They started rolling out Bandcamp Live yesterday, and will be bringing it to more artists in the coming months. If you’re interested in streaming live on Bandcamp, step right this way.
