The idea for a major music festival in Missoula has been a longtime dream of University of Montana alum Scott Osburn (Always On), who since graduating has maintained strong ties with the school and city. Each year Osburn regularly returns to serve as a guest instructor for the UM Entertainment Management Program, while also relishing any opportunity to spend time at his favorite Missoula haunts and visit with longtime friends. Involving Destination Missoula and the UM Entertainment Management Program in the planning of the event was a priority for Zootown, ensuring that the festival is not only a boon to Montana’s incredible music fans and regional business, but also provides UM students with an opportunity to gain real world hands on experience in the music industry.
The Zootown Music Festival also benefits from the expertise and know-how brought to the event by Shore Sound Entertainment and Knitting Factory Presents. Shore Sound’s Jordan Wolowitz serves as the festival’s co-founder and talent buyer, with a proven track record in the live events space including co-founding Governors Ball and Sound On Sound (now Soundside) music festivals. Knitting Factory Presents’ 20+ year history in Missoula promoting live events alongside operating the Big Sky Amphitheater, brings immense value and insight to the planning of the festival.
“I believe there are only a few truly iconic destinations in the U.S. ideal for hosting a festival of this caliber,” shares Scott Osburn, “and to me, Missoula sits at the top of that list. Our goal is for the local and regional community to feel a deep sense of pride and ownership in this event, while giving visitors the chance to discover the unique spirit of Missoula, MT. We’re thrilled about this opportunity and recognize the significant responsibility to create a festival that matches the ethos and awe-inspiring quality of its setting.”
“Missoula is a city with a vibrant and growing music culture, making it an ideal home for the Zootown Festival. We’re thrilled to see this event bringing incredible talent to our community and giving visitors yet another reason to experience all that Missoula has to offer.” - Barbara Neilan (Director - Destination Missoula)
“The Zootown Festival offers an unparalleled learning opportunity for our students to gain firsthand experience with a major music event right here in Missoula. We’re so proud to support this festival because it brings a dynamic experience to our community. Having one of the festival promoters be an alumnus of our program not only showcases the immense impact our Entertainment Management alumni have on the music industry but how our alumni give back to the next generation of industry leaders.” - Margaret “Peggy” Keiper Ph.D. (Director of U of M Entertainment Management)
