SMITHSONIAN FOLKWAYS SEEKS LICENSING AND PUBLISHING ASSISTANT
Smithsonian Folkways is now hiring for the role of Licensing and Publishing Assistant. This position is an exciting opportunity for music industry professionals with 1-3 years of experience in licensing or a closely related field, requiring basic knowledge of standard licensing procedures for sound recordings.
The role assists the Licensing and Publishing Manager with both active and potential licensees of the more than 60,000 recordings and other content in the SFR collections, and assists with SFR’s monetization of publishing copyrights. Full-time remote work is an option for the right candidate.

MAJOR DUTIES INCLUDE
- Responds to incoming license requests promptly, including delivery of assets to licensees and logging request data in internal systems.
- Updates and maintains catalog of assets related to licensable releases via DISCO.
- Maintains and reviews data related to publishing rights, including determining ownership and administration of database.
- Formulates pitches in response to incoming requests, including generation of playlists.
- Promotes new and catalog releases to potential licensees via promotional newsletter and targeted pitches to established contacts.
- Works directly with professionals from across various industries, including music, film, television, advertising, and gaming.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree from accredited four-year college or university and/or 1-3 years of related experience.
- Experience with various industry-standard electronic systems, including DISCO, FileMaker Pro, Dropbox, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Real world experience with licensing related to sound recordings, including sync, and knowledge of industry best practices for license requests and pitch processing.
- Knowledge of song publishing industry best practices and administrative processes related to publishing data.
- Excellent communication skills both written and oral to successfully interact with licensees, staff, artists, and heirs or their agents.
- Extensive knowledge of music from various genres and traditions.
Salary:
The annual salary is based on the GS-7 level on the federal pay scale with a salary range of $55,924 – 59,653/year.
This position is eligible for telework and remote work. The salary range may change dependent on applicant’s location.
