Acclaimed artist Cris Jacobs returns on April 26th with One Of These Days, the first album in five years from the celebrated singer, songwriter and guitarist. The Baltimore native penned the 11 new tracks that brim with vivid storytelling, insightful observations, intimate lyrics all rooted in a foundation of folk, blues, gospel and bluegrass with a contemporary tone. Listen to his new track “Work Song (I Can Still Sing)”, featuring Lindsay Lou on backing vocals HERE.
Jacobs enlisted a cavalcade of amazing artists/friends to contribute to the recording of One Of These Days, starting with Jerry Douglas who produced the album and added some masterful playing. The Infamous Stringdusters (Travis Book, Andy Falco, Jeremy Garrett, Andy Hall and Chris Pandolfi) serve as the incredible house band with special guests that include Lou, Lee Ann Womack, Billy Strings, Sam Bush and The McCrary Sisters. All tracks were recorded live and that palpable energy can be felt throughout the entire recording, starting right out of the gate with the virtuosic playing and Jacob’s soulful vocals on “Heavy Water” (See full track listing below).
The stunning “Wild Roses” follows, which was the first song Jacob’s wrote for the album and the first to kick off the sessions. The infectious title track features Bush’s mandolin, as does the gospel-influenced “Queen Of The Avenue” along with the McCrary Sisters’ soaring backing vocals. The song is based around historical facts with a fictional character set in Baltimore, a common backdrop on the album.
One of the most personal songs on One Of These Days is “Daughter, Daughter.” With only Jacobs on cigar box guitar and Douglas on lap steel, he contemplates the idea of what could happen to his two daughters when they leave for school in this day and age. While that familiar feeling resides in many, he encourages us and himself not to live in fear but to live life.
Writing the new songs was a cathartic process for Jacobs. Following the pandemic, like so many, he found himself dealing with a difficult bout of depression, but he sought help and took up meditation. He came through it and in doing so realized that, aside from his family, creating music gave him a sense of purpose and thus reignited his drive. He wrote all 11 songs in his barn with just himself and a guitar and the process was affirming. As he says in the highly relatable closing track “Everybody’s Lost”, Every little person carry little hurt, some burdens ain’t easy to see / Everybody’s lost, everybody’s lost / Everybody’s flyin a little blind through the night, oh baby shine a light on me.
