Today, with the release of their album Sunday Morning Put-On, the Andrew Bird Trio takes a trip through time. Re-immersed in a longtime love of mid-century small group jazz music, Andrew Bird breathes new life into a collection of songs he first started performing at Chicago clubs in his teens and twenties, discovered during late-night and sunrise broadcasts on the local radio station. In the decades since, the formative work of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Lerner andamp; Loewe, Rodgers andamp; Hart and other "Golden Era" titans has not only been etched into the Great American Songbook, but the many transmutations of Bird's venerated catalog and countless collaborations.
Now, with a three-piece rhythm section rounded out by Ted Poor on drums, and Alan Hampton on bass – plus additional guitar from Jeff Parker and piano by Larry Goldings – Sunday Morning Put-On finds Andrew Bird paying direct homage to the conscious and subliminal influences that have forever shaped his writing and playing. Self-produced and recorded completely live in southern California's legendary Valentine Studios (Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, Beach Boys), the album simultaneously presents Andrew Bird like listeners have and have never heard before, as he charts a sonic territory both foreign and innately familiar.

"Jazz. A funny word that contains some of the best and worst music ever created. Since age 19 to the present, it's been my most consistent musical companion. When I lived on Granville Avenue in Chicago it was an obsession. I listened to Blues Before Sunrise on WBEZ every Saturday night 12-4 am, then Dick Buckley's jazz show on Sundays. I would record them on cassette tapes sometimes dozing off and waking up to flip the tape over. After some 25 years of listening and getting this music in my bones I was finally ready to make this jazz album."
-Andrew Bird
Although the violin is largely absent from the traditional arrangements and musical era that the Andrew Bird Trio reimagines on Sunday Morning Put-Out, the album sees Bird thinking beyond his five strings, and opening his mind to untapped techniques. Treating the violin like a reed instrument – where bow pressure is like forcing breaths of air into the mouthpiece of a tenor saxophone – he harnesses a tone that blends beautifully with the intimacy of his head voice, and channels his virtuosity through new levels of depth, longing and versatility. Together, Bird, Hampton and Poor push their limits as individual improvisers and a collective, cohesive unit – particularly on the closing number and sole original, "Ballon de Peut-etre" – and will showcase the music of Sunday Morning Put-On at a special series of upcoming shows.
In addition to the dozens of dates that Andrew Bird and his touring band will headline this summer, alongside Nickel Creek and Amadou andamp; Mariam, the Andrew Bird Trio will bring Sunday Morning Put-On to Chicago's storied Green Mill jazz club on May 29th, LA's Lodge Room on June 3rd, and the Hollywood Bowl on August 23rd andamp; 24th.
