In the midst of a headlining tour across the United States, Australian singer-songwriter Angie McMahon has announced her new EP Light Sides, a collection of five songs that were written at the same time as her critically acclaimed album Light, Dark, Light Again. With the announcement, McMahon has shared new single “Untangling,” a warm track pulsing with the same intimate yet urgent energy echoed throughout the recent LP. “Untangling” follows “Just Like North” which Consequence called "an entrancing listen that recalls Florence + the Machine.”
“Untangling” in particular is a song that McMahon found difficulty in finishing, with the song living in demo form on her phone since she first started working on the album. “It was written about someone who is deeply entwined in my life,” she says, “so I never felt like either the song or the untangling itself was entirely finished.” The song was recorded at longtime collaborator Alex O’Gorman’s studio in suburban Melbourne, Australia between stops on her recent Making It Through tour - and is the only song on Light Sides that was finished with her much-loved live band: Lachlan O’Kane (drums/percussion), Jess Ellwood (guitar), Stella Farnan (keys/synth) and O’Gorman (bass). “I was surrounded by trees and my friends and I’m so grateful to them for their musical powers,” McMahon adds.

McMahon has just returned to the United States for a string of full-band Midwest and East Coast tour dates. She recently made stops in Chicago, Detroit and Toronto, and will be heading to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, Nashville and Atlanta. She arrives on the heels of a packed performance at Glastonbury, multiple sold-out shows at Melbourne's Forum Theatre and the Sydney Opera House, and an appearance with long-time supporter Fred Again on stage in front of 15,000 fans in Australia. She was most recently in the US this spring, for a fully sold-out run of coast-to-coast shows - plus intimate sets with Trackstar, KEXP and WFUV. Released last October, Light, Dark, Light Again found McMahon unafraid to explore intense personal reckonings in pursuit of rebirth and rediscovery; coming undone and then healing slowly throughout the course of the collection. Light, Dark, Light Againgarnered praise from NPR’s Weekend Edition (“very thoughtful and crafted with deep meaning”), NME and Rolling Stone (who each named it one of Australia’s top 3 albums of 2023), Nylon (“big, unabashedly full sounds”) and Billboard, who named Angie their Indie Artist of the Month.
