Angie McMahon has released her new album 'Light, Dark, Light Again’ today via AWAL, a thirteen song collection that chronicles her journey to reinvention and self-compassion, unafraid to examine the darkest places inside herself and uncover the hope, radiance and healing that lay on the other side. The release of ‘Light, Dark, Light Again’ comes four years after her debut album, and chronicles a period which found the Australian singer-songwriter experiencing intense personal reckonings - relationship shifts, private breakdowns, core-shaking self revelations - and returning with a newfound appreciation for imperfection and the wonder of small moments. Drawing inspiration from many corners of her world - the expansive Australian skies, the work of Tibetan-Buddhist scholar Pema Chödrön, the music of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith - McMahon’s lyrics serve to empower and inspire anyone going through similar struggles, an unabashed snapshot of coming undone then healing slowly and steadily. Angie has also announced a string of North American tour dates for March 2024, where she’ll play her biggest headline shows to date with a full band for the first time - including Bowery Ballroom (NYC) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (Brooklyn), The Troubadour (Los Angeles), and more - performing songs from ‘Light, Dark, Light Again.’
Angie has previewed the record with advance tracks and videos: “Saturn Returning” “a dreamy, theatrical piano piece on returning to oneself after a long period of being lost” (Paste), “Letting Go,” which centers itself around the mantra “it’s okay, make mistakes,” “Fireball Whiskey” which “erects an altar for a lost loved one on” (Nylon), and “Exploding” a cathartic track that sees McMahon proudly leave behind a history of people-pleasing. Recorded between the US and Australia with producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Snail Mail, The War On Drugs), ‘Light, Dark, Light Again’ is both intimate and cosmic - tracing innermost moments of McMahon writing in her bedroom, to the feeling of standing on a canyon and screaming into the open.
‘Light, Dark, Light Again’ follows McMahon’s breakout 2019 debut album Salt - which saw her being compared to "a one-woman Fleetwood Mac" (NPR Music), winning SXSW's esteemed Grulke "Best New Artist" prize and sharing stages with Father John Misty, Leon Bridges, The Pixies, Hozier and Mavis Staples. McMahon has made a triumphant return, selling out shows across three continents, being featured on the cover of the Sydney Morning Herald, landing “Letting Go” as #1 most played as an independent artist in her home country on Triple J, being named Billboard’s Indie Artist of the Month, NPR Music adding “Fireball Whiskey” to their Best Songs of The Week playlist, being featured in Times Square on Spotify’s EQUAL billboard, and showing off her music trivia expertise on the viral TikTok game show Trackstar, amassing 1.7 million views. As Consequence notes, “it’s a welcome return — McMahon not only possesses some serious vocal chops, but her guitar work and songwriting command are always at the fore.” After captivating audiences at The Sultan Room in Brooklyn and at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles this fall, Angie is set to return to the states on a headline tour in March of 2024, making stops in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle and more - with a full list below.
