Following a slew of critically acclaimed features released throughout 2023, GRAMMY® Best New Artist nominee Noah Kahan continues his Stick Season collaboration series and drops “Homesick” with Sam Fender today—listen HERE! A fan favorite during Kahan’s live shows, “Homesick” captures his at times complicated relationship with his Vermont hometown and the juxtaposing feelings of wanting to escape and chase his dreams but also always wanting to come back home. On this collaboration, British songwriter Sam Fender offers a new perspective with his verse and shares similar sentiments about growing up in his hometown of Newcastle—capturing the universal feeling of homesickness.

 

On the collaboration, Noah says, “When I first heard Sam Fender’s music, I stopped what I was doing, started “Dead Boys” from the beginning, and listened 4 more times. It was everything I loved about a song. I followed this artist like a crazy person, checking every day to see if he had dropped new music. Reading every lyric and looking for his interpretation of what they meant. I must have listened to ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ 1,000 times before Seventeen Going Under came out, and I had never felt so connected to a song. I come from a very different place than Sam did, that much was clear in the lyrics, but it felt like I had grown up the same. The nostalgia, pride, bitterness, confusion, and anger that Sam wrote about feeling was so similar to what I was feeling about my childhood and my hometown at the time. This song was the final push for me to start writing about my own experiences.”

 

“As we sat down in Guilford, Vermont to record this album, the very first song we listened to was ‘Seventeen Going Under.’ The song ‘Homesick’ was born out of the confidence instilled in me by listening to someone accurately depict their hometown and what it means to them, for better or for worse.”

 

“When I found out I’d be able to spend the day in Newcastle with Sam, I was nervous but excited. He welcomed me with open arms, let me into his world, showed me places in this community that held so much significance not only to the town, but to Sam himself. I felt very much like an outsider, but by the end, I did start to understand where these songs were coming from, and just how special of a guy Sam really is. He did an absolutely amazing job bringing his experience into my song ‘Homesick.’ He went above and beyond and I truly can’t thank him enough. I hope you enjoy this glance into our worlds, and that it offers you the same connection that I felt when I first heard this dude sing.”

 

Sam shares, “I was told Noah wanted us to work together, and I’d heard the tune ‘Homesick’ and thought it was a lush song. We then spoke on the phone and immediately hit it off. I loved the idea of the song being a transatlantic call-and-response between two young kids desperate to escape their hometowns. The ‘running away’ theme has been done to death by myself, and many other artists over the last 50 years, but it’s relatable.”

“Noah actually came to my hometown of Newcastle when he was on tour, so we met up and I showed him around. I found it canny funny and flattering as he said in his east coast American accent, ‘I wanna see where these songs came from man’, so we hit the Lowlights Tavern for a swift Guinness and walked in the bitter cold of the sea-front. Chatting with him about things in both of our pasts made me realise how universal ‘Homesick’ is. We’ve all been that kid.”

 

“I cut my parts in North Shields, on the banks of the Tyne, literally overlooking the ‘static cranes’ that I mention in my verse; it’s a stone’s throw from the estate in which the riots took place in the early 90’s. It made me proud of my hometown, and my people. The Geordies are a hilarious bunch, resilient and impermeable to hard times and hard drinking; my hometown is a constant source of inspiration. Noah is great lad, a canny chanter and a mean wordsmith. I love the track, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.”

 

Noah’s breakout success story continues into 2024 as he cements his superstar status. In the first few weeks of the year, his Gold-Certified album Stick Season and Platinum-Certified single “Stick Season” have reached new charting peaks across the globe. This week, the album climbed to #5 on the Billboard 200 Chart—its second highest charting position since it debuted at #3 in June 2023 with the release of the deluxe album Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) and the fifth time the album has claimed a spot in the Top 10 since its original release in October 2022. “Stick Season” also rose to the Top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart this week—the song’s highest position on the Hot 100 to date. Not to mention, this week, it held the #1 spot on the UK and Netherlands Official Singles Charts for a second week, while the album continues to climb the UK Official Albums Chart, currently sitting at #4. “Stick Season” also claimed the #1 spot on the Ireland Official Singles Chart for eight weeks, and it hit an all time peak of #3 in Australia this week.

 

Following the biggest year of touring in his career thus far, Kahan kicked off his 2024 “We’ll All Be Here Forever World Tour” in Australia this week. The tour, which The Hollywood Reporter recently named one of the Top 10 “Most Anticipated Concert Tours of 2024,” includes sold-out headline shows in stadiums, arenas, and amphitheaters around the globe, including two sold-out nights at Boston’s Fenway Park, New York’s Madison Square Garden, Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, London’s The O2, and many more. Last month, Kahan made a career-defining musical debut on Saturday Night Live, delivering electrifying performances of “Stick Season” and “Dial Drunk.” In the fall, he was named an honoree on the TIME100 Next list—read his op-ed written by two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin HERE. He also received two Billboard Music Awardsnominations for “Top Rock Artist” and “Top Rock Album” and a People’s Choice Awards nomination for “The New Artist Of The Year.” Noah was recently featured on the covers of Pollstar, Paste Magazine, and SPIN, where Post Malone described him as “one of a kind.”

The Stick Season collaboration series also includes previous releases with Gracie Abrams on “Everywhere, Everything,” Hozier on “Northern Attitude” (Certified Gold), Kacey Musgraves on “She Calls Me Back” (Certified Gold), Lizzy McAlpine on “Call Your Mom,” and Post Malone on “Dial Drunk” (Certified Platinum). In July 2023, Noah released the deluxe version Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever), which debuted at #3 on Billboard 200 Chart, #1 on Billboard Top Americana/Folk Albums Chart, #1 on Billboard Top Alternative Albums Chart, #1 on Billboard Top Rock Albums Chart, and more. Impressively, Noah became the 5th artist in history with 18 songs on Billboard Hot Rock andamp; Alternative Charts in one week, alongside David Bowie and Taylor Swift. The album featured new single “Dial Drunk,” which peaked at #1 on both the Alternative and AAA Radio Charts in the US. On the one-year anniversary of Stick Season’s original release last October, the single saw a massive resurgence on the charts as temperatures dropped and “stick season” began—climbing to the Top 5 overall on the Spotify Top 200 Chart in the US, UK, and Canada.

 

On last year’s World Mental Health Day, Noah proudly shared that his mental health initiative The Busyhead Projecthas surpassed its initial goal of “$1 million for mental health” and generated over $2 million dollars to date—with the purpose of creating a world where mental healthcare is acceptable and accessible for everyone.
