flipturn, one of indie-rock’s most “powerful forces” (V Mag), have shared new single “Sunlight,” the final advance track from the band’s forthcoming album Burnout Days, out January 24 via Dualtone Records. A deeply cathartic story of supporting a loved one through their journey from addiction to recovery, "Sunlight" is perhaps the most personal writing flipturn’s Dillon Basse (lead vocals / guitar) has ever done. The song traces Basse's upbringing – from touring with his mom, a Celtic folk singer, in his youth to supporting her on her path to sobriety. Packed with profoundly candid lyrics and backed by a gripping swirl of distorted guitars and crashing cymbals, Basse reflects on watching his little sister take their mother to rehab: “Amy’s on her way to rehab again / Lily’s gonna drive her there / Every ounce of gas that she has / Mama, she’d take you anywhere.”
“‘Sunlight’ might be the most personal and honest song I’ve written lyrically,” says Basse.“I started writing words for it the day my mom had to be driven to rehab again by my little sister. I wanted to tell a story of acceptance of those closest to us for who they are because ultimately they are the people shaping us and changing us the most. My mom took up growing bonsais when she got home from rehab as a hobby to help prevent her from drinking. She would also recite and preach to us the serenity prayer. ‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.’ That’s really where the idea for the rest of the song came from. Like a bonsai tree’s branches needing to be cut in order for it to grow, human beings also need to be pruned in order to grow, even if it hurts like a motherfucker.”
To accompany “Sunlight,” flipturn have shared a beautifully-crafted video, animated by Kohana Wilson, depicting some of the themes woven throughout the song: bonsai trees, family dynamics and the concept of home. “The bonsai tree represents something you can control amidst the chaos of life. That control can often be a form of escapism or false sense of security and Kohana weaves their beautiful vision of this image between the intimate and personal lyrics and the driven heart of the music” says Tristan Duncan (lead guitar).

“Sunlight” captures the essence of Burnout Days: a mix of ethereal, raw, rhythmic moments, all underscored with palpable emotion and poignant storytelling. Born from flipturn's years on the road together, the collection recounts hours spent in vans, green rooms, and onstage, all while navigating the constant twists and turns of an industry that can be far from compassionate. The new record has already been praised for its "irresistible hooks" (Consequence), by way of recent singles “Rodeo Clown” and “Juno.” These lead tracks have also been in rotation on top radio stations like KCRW, WFUV, KUTX and Sirius XMU - while bringing the band to over 200 million career streams. Just this week, flipturn made their international debut with three sold-out nights in London, and earned their first-ever airplay on BBC Radio 1’s prestigious Indie Show.
Formed in the small coastal town of Fernandina Beach, Florida - flipturn first came together in high school, where they worked passionately to turn garage meet-ups into playing college house shows into headlining sold-out dates for thousands. On that front, they recently announced a 2025 coast-to-coast headline tour - which will see flipturn push into their largest venues yet, in many cases doubling the size of the rooms they played just a year ago.
