Eclectic folk/roots/rock band Fruition returns on August 23rd with their long-awaited studio album How To Make Mistakes and new fall tour dates (see below). For their first offering in four years, the acclaimed Portland, OR quintet took a fresh new approach to recording by producing the album themselves and recording all tracks live off the floor. The result is a collection that embraces the in-the-moment connection and feel of a live band and songs that exude the love, growth, longing, loss, and sheer life lived during the group’s fifteen years together. A prime example is the new single “Saturday Night,” with its intimate, easygoing groove and sublime vocal harmonies, a Fruition signature. Listen to “Saturday Night” HERE.

The 13 songs that comprise How To Make Mistakes span the spectrum of emotion and experience, making them easily relatable and memorable. “If you’re doing it right, you’re bound to make mistakes,” says vocalist and guitarist Jay Cobb Anderson. “Existence is a messy affair. Grace isn’t a swan, it’s a pigeon. The most beautiful intricate beadwork is often purposely flawed, to let the soul out. Perfection isn’t natural. The dearest memories are bent and dented. Priceless relics come chipped and cracked, and bruised fruit always tastes a little bit sweeter.”

“Hard to Make Money” lopes along playfully, while “Take It Back” revisits a past relationship with a longing nostalgia. The folky blues of “Can You Tell Me” searches for deeper meaning, followed by the campfire-styled anthem “Never Change,” which contrasts fleeting moments with lasting principals: “In the end what matters is the love we’ve made along the way.” “Scars,” with its earthy textures and ethereal sweep, paints a vivid picture of the emotional toll of past actions. “When It’s All Said and Done” reflects themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, and the eventual clarity that comes with time – a perfect message to close How To Make Mistakes.

Fruition is Jay Cobb Anderson (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Kellen Asebroek (vocals, guitar, piano), Mimi Naja (vocals, guitar, piano, mandolin), Jeff Leonard (bass), and Tyler Thompson (drums). Distinguished by soaring three-part harmonies and three accomplished songwriters, Fruition has built an impressive body of work that is both uniquely their own and instantly familiar. How To Make Mistakes is the truest representation of the band’s all-encompassing sound, embodying the full spread of Fruition’s past and present on the most definitive album of their career.
