In the midst of a breakout year touring across four continents, Australian singer and musician Angie McMahon (she/her) today releases Light Sides - a five-song companion EP to her critically acclaimed album Light, Dark, Light Again. Stream Light Sides HERE.
Light Sides is the final piece of the Light, Dark, Light Again puzzle, and features five intimate, yet soaring and expansive songs, including the already released ‘Just Like North’ and latest single ‘Untangling.’ Angie McMahon shares, “Light Sides is a collection of songs that live alongside Light, Dark, Light Again. They were written in the process of making the album, born in the same universe. They didn’t fit in the record and I didn’t know if they’d be released, but it feels right to complete the chapter by letting these ones go. Thanks for making space for the record in your lives and entering the world of it with me. I hope these extra pieces give a little extra colour to the story.”
The five songs on Light Sides were put to tape at studios in Nashville, Los Angeles, North Carolina and on Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung Country in Australia, during the Light, Dark, Light Again album sessions and while Angie McMahon has been on the road for her year-long world tour. Light Sides opener ‘Beginner’ - written with and featuring vocals from Emma Louise, and produced and mixed by Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, Beyoncé, Foxygen) - is a reminder to detach from the idea of being certain; there is always more to learn. On ‘Interstate’ - recorded with Anna Laverty (Camp Cope, Courtney Barnett) mixed by Lars Stalfors (Soccer Mommy, St. Vincent, Portugal. The Man) - McMahon wanted to capture the emotion that circled while she fell in love in a way that blindsided her. The intimate, piano-led ‘Take Up Space’ that closes both Light Sides and the Light, Dark, Light Again chapter, was recorded with GRAMMY-nominated producer Jeremy Lutito and was birthed by a song prompt from Mimi Gilbert - who just toured the US supporting McMahon. It’s a sister song of sorts to ‘Exploding’, giving a voice to someone who hurt her, while bursting with empathy and compassion.

Released last October to widespread critical acclaim, Light, Dark, Light Again is an album about going to the darkest places inside yourself, facing your fears, and learning they can serve as a portal to something bigger and brighter. Angie McMahon comes undone then heals slowly and strangely across the record. The quiet but transformative revelations she had about life in this time were poured into the album on which she examines her relationship with self, and the journey to becoming okay with whoever she is, and whatever the future holds. The quiet poetry of McMahon’s lyrics will serve as a buoy to anyone facing their own fear, empowering and encouraging them to go forward. Learn more about Light, Dark, Light Again via NPR’s Weekend Edition.
Angie McMahon first entered the cultural consciousness with her breakthrough 2019 debut album Salt, a record that would go on to cement her as a globally recognized artist. Bringing a deeply emotive approach to her music with ethereal notes in the vein of Angel Olsen and Florence and the Machine, and an explosive live show reminiscent of Big Thief and The War on Drugs, Angie McMahon has become renowned for her truthful storytelling that speaks to the unpolished and messy experiences of life.
