Today Verve Records releases Roy Hargrove’s Crisol: Grand-Terre, a never-before-heard album by Roy Hargrove and his acclaimed band of musicians. Recorded in April 1998, fresh off their GRAMMY win for Best Latin Jazz Performance for their debut album HabanaGrand-Terre showcases their blistering and powerful signature sound. Listen to the album HERE.

Renowned for his compositions and abilities on the trumpet and flugelhorn, The New York Times called Roy “…the most impactful trumpeter of his generation.” Hargrove’s red-hot playing and superlative writing is in top form on Grand-Terre and showcases his fiery musical give-and-take with his “Crisol”—or melting pot—of long-time collaborators. This all-star group of Cuban, American and Guadeloupian musicians created the unique sound that fed into Hargrove’s unparalleled approach to jazz and the mélange of musical genres that appear on the record. The album arrives two days after what would have been Roy’s 55th birthday.

One of the tracks from the recording sessions, “Rumba Roy,” is accompanied by a new visualizer. Watch now HERE. Most recently it was announced that members of the Crisol will reunite for the first time in over 25 years to perform at the annual Winter Jazz Festival on January 10th at City Winery.

Roy’s singular blending of jazz, afro-Cuban rhythms, soul, bop, and funk influenced a generation of jazz, hip hop and neo-soul musicians. From Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper to D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, and Questlove, all these artists—who are now household names— were shaped by Roy Hargrove’s music and what he crafted in the studio.
