I gotta admit, I wasn't as familiar as I should be with The Wrecks when I got a copy of this new four song EP for review and with a name like The Wrecks, I think I expected something altogether different. That said, what I got was a pleasant surprise of summertime sounding pop delivered in the dead of winter. The four songs on Static, a mix of  everything from upbeat dance tracks to ballads about longing for that one special person, conjure up feelings of cruising the PCH, top down in the 'stang with your best girl smiling big while the both of you belt out the choruses at the top of your lungs.

In a time when singles are all the rage, albums almost a thing of the past and EPs thought of as the happy medium in product delivery, The Wrecks deliver a short but sweet punch of feel-good RandB influenced emo-pop ala Fun, Bad Suns, Colony House or even Cobra Starship. The EP starts off with "Static", a song that would fit perfectly well on any Nate Ruess project (the singer actually sounds a bit like Nate from time to time) who's chorus "you're not, you're not the havok in my head I wish the static would stop...I shoulda known better", is an introspective anthem of regret that digs around like an earworm you can't quite place.

“We originally wanted to release a deluxe version of our album Infinitely Ordinary, but often times deluxe tracks get snubbed a bit and we didn’t want that to happen to these songs. So we decided to give them their own release, and an opportunity to reach more people,” shares frontman Nick Anderson on the upcoming release.

The second track on the EP, "I Hope Its Cold in New York" has a bit of a spiteful bite to it that might just be perfect for this time of year. The Wrecks know how to write a hook and wrap it in the kind of enveloping warmth that can make even bitter breakup lyrics sound like an ode to long lost love. They follow that up my favorite track on this EP, a banger of an almost-pop-punk tune that would have been a rage back in the '10s and hopefully gets all the attention it deserves in the '20s. The singalong chorus is filled with the type of gang vocals that just screams sing me now!

In true pop radio single-releasing fashion, The Wrecks bring you up through the whole affair, hooking you with one catchy single after the next and when you're finally hooked, drop the tear-jerking ballad on you like a fuckin' bomb. You're done. The fourth song on the EP, "Try To Remember", finishes out the mini opus that is Static with a big ole' pile of the feels.

The Wrecks formed in 2015 in Thousand Oaks, CA. With heavy influences from The Pixies, The Strokes, and Weezer, they snuck into a recording studio to self-produce their debut EP, We Are The Wrecks. The group’s 2018 follow-up, Panic Vertigo, earned similar acclaim, with Ones To Watch hailing the four-piece as “indie rock’s best kept-secret” and Billboard calling them “as authentic and honest as possible.” Since then, the band has secured a number of nationwide tours while opening for bands such as Nothing But Thieves, Silversun Pickups, The Struts, New Politics, Paramore, and All Time Low.
